Portland Head Light open to public on September 9

Maine Open Lighthouse Day this year is on Saturday, September 9, 2023.  Get up early and get in line to climb the tower at Portland Head Light on the one day of the year it is open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Fort Williams Park will open at sunrise, and beginning at 8:45 a.m., the US Coast Guard will distribute 280 free tickets on a first-come-first-serve basis to those standing in line.  Each ticket includes an entrance time to climb the 85 steps up the spiral staircase for a bird's eye view of Fort Williams and Casco Bay. Participants must be 48 inches in height.

This popular annual event, which is sponsored by the United States Coast Guard, the Maine Office of Tourism, and the American Lighthouse Foundation, attracts between 15,000 to 18,000 visitors each year and offers the general public the rare opportunity to climb and learn about more than a dozen historic Maine lights.  All lighthouses will be open 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted.  For a complete list of lighthouse and more information:  CLICK HERE.
