State property-tax relief checks coming soon: Be sure your information is correct

Cape Elizabeth property owners already benefitting from the state's Homestead Property Tax Exemption are due for some extra relief in January 2020.

The Maine State Treasurer's Office is readying relief checks to send to more than 300,000 Mainers, including 2,240 in Cape Elizabeth, under a new state law enacted by this summer. The law requires the state to provide tax relief payments of no less than $100 to qualifying homesteads.

"We anticipate that qualifying property tax payers may reach out regarding potentially incorrect information on the checks," said Treasurer Henry E.M. Beck, in a message to Maine municipalities.

Incorrect, misspelled or missing information can result in recipients not being able to cash the check; or worse, not receiving the check at all.

Cape Elizabeth, along with other Maine municipalities, has provided current taxpayer information to the Treasurer's Office. If you need to make updates please contact the town assessor's office, 207-799-1669, before Dec. 31 to ensure successful receipt of the relief check. You can also check your information with the assessor's office, or you can search the Assessor's Database.

Only homeowners with the Homestead Property Tax Exemption on their 2019/2020 tax bills qualify for the refund check. Those filing Homestead Exemptions after April 1, 2019 are not eligible.

Checks are slated to be mailed to qualifying homeowners in January and February.

If you have problems with your check, or if you believe you qualify but haven't received one, the Treasurer's Office will have a call-center set up from Jan. 3-March 31 to take updated information. Once the town of Cape Elizabeth approves that information the state will reissue a corrected check.
