Fourth-graders win 2nd place in 'Be a Famous Writer' contest

Fourth-graders in Cherie MacIness' class at Pond Cove Elementary School took second place in the 10th annual Mrs. P's "Be a Famous Writer" contest.

The theme of this year's contest was Heroes. "There's a process that (MacInnes) goes through where the students brainstorm together and they independently write sections of the story and work on it, revise it and edit it and put it all together," Principal Jason Manjourides told the School Board at their meeting Jan. 8, 2019.

The contest website described the Pond Cove submission, "A True Hero," as collaborative, and nicely written with evocative, small details. "Mrs. P also decided to make this story into a video as well because of the enduring and important message that everyday acts of kindness can make you a hero."

Mrs. P, portrayed by television actress Kathy Kinney, is the story-telling representative of contest sponsor Mrs. P's Magic Library featured on the web and social media.

According to MacInnes' school blog, the video will feature illustrations that her students will soon create. "Mrs. P will narrate the story, and it will go on her Storytime web site for all to enjoy!" says the blog post from Jan. 8. The blog also features quotes from the students who worked on the project.
