Policy update establishes procedure for naming school facilities

The School Board on June 11, 2019 approved an update to its policy for naming school facilities.

The updated policy establishes a committee to review naming requests, and prohibits naming of school facilities for a person, couple or family without "universal" support. Instead, "the (School) Board encourages individuals who seek to honor or memorialize an individual, couple, or family to establish a scholarship or endowment fund," the policy says.

Final decisions will be made by the School Board, or in the case of a field or other facility outside of a school building, by the board and by the Town Council.

In other policy matters June 11 the board approved a minor update to the policy on harassment and sexual harassment of students, bringing it in line with the model published by the Maine School Management Association.

At the beginning of the meeting School Board members heard from Cape Elizabeth High School students who called for a policy to address sexual assault, specifically student rights and expectations, guidelines for reporting and consequences for perpetrators. Hope Straw, chair of the board's policy subcommittee, said that policies on sexual assault and mandatory reporting are on the committee's work plan for the fall, as are policies on cell-phone use and technology.
