Support of strategic plan tops School Board goals for 2019-20

The School Board on Oct. 8, 2019 approved its goals for 2019-20, building upon last year's goals and retaining the strategic plan as a primary focus.

"I think it's easy for these to get eclipsed by the formation of the strategic plan, yet ... every year (it's) really important that we visit them, re-establish or create any new goals," said School Board Chair Susana Measelle Hubbs.

Board members decided the wording of the goals immediately after approving goals for the 2020-2025 strategic plan.

Here are the goals approved for 2019-20:

  1. Support a new strategic plan.
  2. Continue the collaborative and proactive budget developmental process that includes stakeholders such as the town council and community members
  3. Consider the findings of the facilities study, take into consideration the recommendations of the building committee and make strategic investments which modernize and repair aging school buildings and grounds as well as maximize student learning and safety.
  4. Cultivate and leverage community involvement with the Cape Elizabeth School Department.

The fourth goal, to leverage community involvement, has universal application and may get more attention as work on the strategic plan progresses. "We have a wealth of talent and knowledge and experience in our community and I think we have a lot of community members willing and eager to share," said board member Elizabeth Scifres.
