Dog-ordinance review continues June 17

The Town Council's ordinance subcommittee will continue review of proposed amendments to the dog ordinance, including possible revisions to the dog rules for Fort Williams Park, on Monday, June 17, 2019 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall chamber.

More information will be posted to the town website approximately one week before the meeting.

Once the Ordinance Committee completes its review, the draft amendments will be forwarded to the Town Council, which will schedule a public hearing.

The council referred the proposed amendments, drafted by the Conservation Committee, to the ordinance subcommittee in May. The committee met on May 28. [May 28 meeting packet]. The most significant change proposed for the ordinance is the creation of three categories for managing dogs on municipal property:

  • Category 1 - No dogs allowed
  • Category 2 - Dogs on-leash only
  • Category 3 - Dogs on-leash or under voice control

Most of the 89 municipal properties listed in the draft as of May 13 are in Category 3, including a 20-acre subsection of Fort Williams Park first delineated in 1989-90. In 2018 the area was reconfigured, and dogs required to be on-leash at the multipurpose playing fields in the park from April to November. [news article]
