Second Comprehensive Plan 2019 public hearing, adoption July 8

The Town Council will hold a second public hearing on a proposed comprehensive plan update at 7 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2019. The council is expected to adopt the plan following the hearing.

No one spoke at an initial hearing held June 10, and review workshops held in May were lightly attended. "I will use this opportunity as encouragement for those that are interested to be sure to come out to our July 8 meeting," said Town Council chair Jamie Garvin. "We will have a second public hearing for the public to have an opportunity to weigh in on this."

A final workshop will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, at Town Hall for councilors to fine-tune revisions before the July vote. The workshop will not be televised.

State law requires municipalities to have a comprehensive plan to guide development. The draft is an update to the current 2007 plan, and is the product of a two-year process that included public forums, a public survey and 27 meetings of a nine-member, Comprehensive Plan 2019 Committee.

Overall, the comprehensive plan recommends continuation of existing land use management and policies, according to the draft's executive summary. "The deliberative process used in the development of the plan, as well as the community's support for responsible governance, should help implement the plan's 89 recommendations," the summary says.

Review, adoption and beginning implementation of the plan is on the council's list of goals for 2019.
