Update - The disturbed area on Oakhurst Road is paved is open for single-lane traffic at 12 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018

Oakhurst Road sewer-replacement closure extended to Sept. 14

Due to rain and other factors, the sewer-replacement project underway on Oakhurst Road will be extended to Sept. 14, 2018.

Oakhurst Road, between the Portland Water District Pumping Station and Rock Wall Lane, will be closed between 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. through Friday, Sept. 14.

Robert Malley, Public Works director, said the contractor is unable to work today (Tuesday, Sept. 11) because of the Monday night rain. The project is also going more slowly than anticipated, he said.

The closure is allowing a segment of the sanitary sewer main to be replaced, said Public Works Director Robert Malley. "The sewer line was installed in 1975, and has developed a sag over the years", Malley said. If not cleaned on a regular basis, the sag contributes to backups in a nearby residence on Rock Wall Lane.

The work involves replacing a 100-foot segment of pipe located between Rock Wall Lane and the pumping station. "The line is located in the middle of the road so maintaining even single-lane traffic while the work is being done would be a challenge," said Malley.

The road will be open to single-lane traffic at the completion of work each day. Motorists should exercise caution while transiting the work zone. The town has contracted with Dearborn Construction, Inc. of Buxton to perform the work.
