High School Theatre presents Dickens adaptation, 'The Tragedy and Triumph of Smike', March 6-8

Cape Elizabeth High School Theatre will present a one-act play, "The Tragedy and Triumph of Smike: A Friendship Wrought from Misery," at 6 p.m. Tuesday March 6 (please note time change); and at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 7 and 8, in the High School auditorium. Additional performances will also be scheduled.

"Smike" is adapted from Charles Dickens' classic novel "Nicholas Nickleby," which opened eyes to the abuse that children suffered in "public schools" - little more than workhouses for unfortunate children.

The production is the school's entry in the Maine Drama Festival regionals, to be held March 9-10 at Westbrook High School.

Hard-hitting, fast paced, and up-lifting, "Smike" is pure Dickens with its mix of melodrama and humor, said director Richard Mullen.

Tickets are $5 at the door.
