The Town Council on Jan. 18, 2017 unanimously approved the appointment of Matthew Sturgis as town manager.

He will begin his duties Jan. 30.

Sturgis, Cape Elizabeth tax assessor since 2001, was chosen from a field of 38 applicants in a nationwide search.

"We had many many outstanding candidates of which, Matt, you were clearly the right choice for us," Chair Jamie Garvin said after the vote.

Sturgis assignment includes town treasure and tax collector. His three-year employment agreement has a starting salary of $110,000.

"We're excited about you assuming the new responsibilities in a couple of weeks and look forward to great continued success," Garvin said.

Sturgis became Cape Elizabeth's tax assessor in 2001, and in 2015 also became chief assessor in Scarborough, splitting his time between the two towns. He succeeds Michael McGovern, who retired Dec. 31, 2016 after 31 years as manager.
