Action Items- Grant requests for Let’s Go!:
- PC Update: Paula reported on the upcoming “Maine School Site Health Promotion Conference” at Sugarloaf the last week in June. Paula, Elaine, Sarah, Beth, and Ayn Allmendinger will all be attending and Alan, Karen and Andrea will be visiting at different points in the week. Paula asked for feedback on our groups “action plan” for the week. Several suggestions were made including the farms/fishing/school connection and ideas related to staff wellness. Training for the AED was raised with the suggestion that the Food Service staff get training in this area.
- Middle School Update: Julie thanked Sue for the changes in the cafeteria and updated us on how the Let’s Go! grant money is being used. Mike Weber, a motivational speaker, is currently scheduled to speak to the different grades and parents on September 22nd. Julie reported on the end-of-year meeting with Let’s Go! where we were able to reflect on how the Let’s Go! resources and support have helped our Wellness Initiative. Sarah was able to give us an update on air quality in our schools and continues to make progress in this area.
- High School Update: Elaine Brassard reported on the High School Nutrition/CEEF grant presentation to the community this past Saturday night at the Pasta with a Purpose collaborative celebration. Several faculty members, students and Sue were all in attendance to help inform several hundred community members of what will be accomplished with the CEEF grant money. Elaine also updated the committee on the vendor presentations to the High School Wellness Committee to help us complete this project.
- Food Services Update: Sue King Buckley reported on the visit to Yarmouth with Alan and Karen and additional improvements in the cafeterias. She is working closely with our vendors to finalize equipment purchases, etc. with the vendor we selected to help us implement our “Nutritional Design” vision for the High School.
- Walk/Ride to School: There are currently three Walk/Ride to School days in June with the different Parent Associations working to line up volunteers. Sue Weatherbie has worked with Chief Williams to inform the community on the flashing sign on Route 77 to be on the look out for students participating and to proceed with caution on these days.
Topics for discussion:
- Staff Support- Raising Awareness and offering support to faculty and staff: Carolyn Flaherty addressed the committee on topics ranging from developing a substitute list to help in the cafeteria, to educating and supporting staff on a variety of student health issues (diabetes, allergies, etc.) Carolyn will be working closely with the Wellness Committee, administrators, faculty and staff to help facilitate the necessary support in these areas. Thank you Carolyn!
- Walk/Bike paths and traffic light: Mary Ann Lynch encouraged all present to write to the Town Councilors if they support the Walk/Bike paths on Shore Road and the proposed traffic light at the intersection of Shore Road and Rt. 77. Both of these would encourage and make possible safe, physical activity for students interested in walking or riding their bikes to school.
- Let’s Go! Evaluation: Emily Bugbee reported on feedback from the Let’s Go! evaluation forms and received additional feedback from Wellness Committee Members. Emily sits on the Let’s Go! Evaluation committee and will be able to incorporate this feedback into the surveys for next year.
- Nutrition in our Cafeterias (Dr. Jeff Safer and Patsy Catsos): Dr. Safer and Patsy Catsos reported on their time spent with Sue evaluating and discussing nutrition in our cafeterias. Patsy started by listing all of the improvements that have been made over the past several years and then made some suggestions as how we can continue to improve. Both saw our number #1 priority to be the reduction of processed foods. Preparing more food from scratch vs. serving processed frozen food. The #2 priority mentioned was moving away from unhealthy selections- less or no unhealthy a la carte items and streamlining offerings to encourage healthy choices. Thank you Jeff and Patsy for your time and we look forward to your continued help in this area!
The next Wellness Committee Meeting will be held in September- TBD.
Thanks to everyone on the Wellness Committee for a positive and action- oriented year of Wellness Work!!
