School calendar approved for
2005-2006
The School Board on May 10 unanimously approved the proposed school calendar
for 2005-2006.
The calendar includes monthly, morning-only sessions for the Pond Cove and
Middle School to give teachers time for common planning.
Officials "have not heard a great deal of input" since the calendar proposal
was first considered by the School Board last month, said Interim Superintendent
Robert Lyman.
"We had a couple of e-mails," Lyman said.
The 2005-2006 calendar is the collaborative effort of the district's 10-member
calendar committee, with input from parents through a survey that generated
a high response.
The calendar calls for a pre-Labor Day start to the 2005-2006 school year,
with teachers beginning Aug. 29 and students attending their first day on
Thursday, Sept. 1. Labor Day this year is Monday, Sept. 5.
The half-day early releases for Pond Cove and Middle School students will
be on the second Wednesday of every month. Upon dismissal -- noon for elementary
students and 11:20 a.m. for middle-schoolers -- teachers will have a chance
for common planning time.
On those half-days, kindergartners enrolled in morning classes will attend
from 8:30-10 a.m.; and those in afternoon classes will attend from 10:30
a.m.-noon.
High School teachers will have their planning time when students are in study
hall. However, two late start days for students in grades 9, 10 and 12 are
scheduled for March 8 and 9 to facilitate Maine Education Achievement testing
for 11th graders. School for high-schoolers not taking MEAs will begin at
11 a.m. on those days.
