Arts Commission offering grants to expand, perfect local
artistic skills
The Cape Elizabeth Arts Commission is currently seeking grant applications
from Cape Elizabeth artists and/or art organizations looking to expand
or perfect their artistic skills.
The grant program was created to help artists more fully realize their creative
goals through individualized funding support. The grant should be used for
projects that promote excellence and diversity in the arts community.
Those applying must be Cape Residents or groups that serve primarily the
Cape Elizabeth community. Applicants must be 18 years of age or be
represented by an adult.
The application deadline is June 1, 2008.
The commission is encouraging submissions from all types of artists
including musicians, dancers, writers, designers, visual artists, musical
theater, or artists from film and video. "We think this is a wonderful
program that gives residents of Cape Elizabeth an opportunity to gain funding
for projects they might not otherwise have considered," said Adam Weiner,
a member of the Arts Commission.
Past awards winners include musician
Sam Sherry, who used a grant to support
his recording of a jazz song-cycle based on Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet."
Visual artist Jill Shaw was awarded a grant for her work, "A Celebration
of Kettle Cove," a multi-media presentation held at the Thomas Memorial Library
that included paintings, poetry, sculpture and mobiles. More recently,
award recipient Janice Reale-Hatem exhibited her black-and-white
photographs, hand-colored photographs, and historical photographs entitled
"Stories From Our Seniors: Connections Between People and Places in Cape
Elizabeth," at the library.
Applications for the grant program are available at the Thomas Memorial Library,
6 Scott Dyer Road. The forms are also available
for download on this Web site.
Library Gallery exhibitors also sought
The Arts Commission is also looking for artists would be interested in displaying
their work in the Thomas Memorial Library. The display is changed monthly
and can include artists from outside Cape Elizabeth. Applications are available
at the library, and on this Web site.
