Town Council, Portland Post Office honor retired Cape Cottage postmaster for more than 65 years of service

The Cape Elizabeth Town Council and the Portland Post Office honored Ann Burke, retired postmaster of the Cape Cottage Branch, and her husband Wallace Burke on Jan. 11, 2012.

Ann Burke served for more than 65 years operating the Cape Cottage Post Office.  After Mrs. Burke had a fall two years ago, Mr. Burke assumed responsibility for the post office, until the branch closed its door this fall after 113 years of serving local postal customers.

The Town plaque reads:

Sixty-Five Years of Postal Service to the Town of Cape Elizabeth

You Made the Cape Cottage Post Office a Community Institution and in Doing So You Became Community Institutions.

Acting Portland Postmaster Regina Bugbee presented a framed image of a recent postage stamp commemorating American painter and printmaker Mary Cassatt, with a plaque honoring Ann Burke.
