State releases second revision of school funding forecast for fiscal 2011
The state Department of Education on March 19 released updated estimates for general purpose aid to education to local school systems for fiscal 2011.
The revision adds nearly $55,000 to the latest allocation estimate for Cape Elizabeth released March 3, and $347,000 more than initial estimates in early February.
Revised figures show Cape Elizabeth receiving $2.88 million in state aid next fiscal year, approximately $300,000 more than what was allocated this year, before the fiscal 2010 budget curtailment.
In a press release, state Education Commissioner Susan Gendron said the new estimates reflect the latest addition of $5 million in general purpose aid to education proposed by Gov. John Baldacci and approved in-concept this week by the Legislature's appropriations committee. "Combined with the previous $20 million restoration, the budget under consideration by the Legislature now includes $25 million more for GPA than it did on Feb. 2, 2010, when the original spreadsheet was made available," he release says.
These subsidy amounts will not be final until the budget is approved by the Legislature.
The state announced the extra $5 million in funding March 11 as a result of extended federal Recovery Act funding. The added $5 million restores $25 million of the $35 million mid-year reduction for fiscal 2011.
