Boat storage rules take effect at Great Pond
If you have “wintered” a boat at Great Pond, now is the time to bring your boat home. Any boats left at Great Pond after March 25, 2010 will be removed.
For anyone who would like to store a boat at Great Pond, formal boat storage will soon be available.
New boat storage rules, and a permitting system for boat storage, were approved by the Town Council in January, along with an updated conservation and access easement to Great Pond offered by the Sprague Corp. The rules allow for boat storage from the last Saturday in March to the first Saturday in November.
The Town is working now on details of the board storage system so they will be ready to begin this season. Conservation Commission volunteers will be building the rack this month, and the Town Council is expected to set the permit fee in early April.
A boat storage permit, which will be available from the Town Hall, will be required to use the rack. Along with the permit will be a decal to affix to the boat, indicating it can be stored on the rack. A total of 30 permits will be issued each season, on a first-come, first-served basis.
In addition, anyone may continue to carry in/carry out a boat when they visit Great Pond.
The new boat storage rules were requested by the Sprague Corporation in return for renewing the conservation and access easement that connects the end of Fenway Road to Great Pond.
More than 30 boats had accumulated on both sides of the access path to the water. The boats were sitting in the vegetation buffer which is necessary to maintain the water quality of Great Pond. Not only did the boat storage degrade the vegetated buffer, but it has become obvious that some of the boats had been abandoned.
The new storage system is intended to provide an environmentally sensitive method of storing boats. The permit system will make it possible to track boat owners.
Boats are required to be removed at the end of the season, which will also reduce the incidence of abandoned boats.
A copy of the boat storage rules, available on this Web site, will also be provided to permit holders.
