October 'Walk to School Day' coincides with national celebration

Community Services has planned a "Walk to School Day" to coincide with a national walk-to-school celebration on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009.

Unlike past walk-to-school days, when children walked or biked to school from their homes, Pond Cove students on Oct. 7 will meet at one location and march to school as one as they celebrate the benefits of walking. The observance is part of an international Walk to School Month.

Students will be brought to school on their regular schedules, whether by bus, walking or biking, but rather than enter the school building they will meet in front of the 1930s building of the Middle School. From there, teachers and community volunteers will lead students along the campus sidewalks to Scott Dyer Road, east to Ocean House Road and the town center, then south to the Public Safety Building where they will head back to school by Jordan Way.

"We invite you to practice the loop with your child, volunteer, and/or make signs for your child to carry showing their support for physical activity," says an Oct. 1, 2009 letter to parents of Pond Cove school children.

The elementary school students will be the primary participants in this walk-to-school celebration, said Community Services Director Janet Hoskin. Community Services is hoping to include High School students as helpers, she said.

Bikes will not be included in the walk through the town center.
For more information or to volunteer, please contact Community Services, 799-2868.

Rain date for this event is Thursday, Oct. 8.
