Parking, traffic code changes scheduled for public hearing Nov. 9

Proposed amendments to the town's traffic ordinance will be up for public hearing before the Town Council on Monday, Nov. 9, 2009. The hearing begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall chamber.

The proposed amendments primarily address Casino Beach traffic and parking on Surf Road and Cottage Lane, said Sara Lennon, chairman of the council's ordinance subcommittee.

"People were parking all over the place and blocking traffic and blocking access for emergency vehicles," Lennon said at the Oct. 14, 2009 meeting of the council.

The amendments outline where parking will be allowed and prohibited, and provide for parking signage in the area, Lennon said.

The amendments do not, however, address parking near 551 and 553 Shore Road, an area where business zoning has recently been expanded. The ordinance committee is waiting until the owner of a new retail business at 553 Shore Road completes the site and parking improvements approved by the Planning Board in August.

The proposed amendments also eliminate a current prohibition of on-street parking in areas where off-street parking is available; and, set parking restrictions for various types of trucks and trailers.

Police Chief Neil Williams, who suggested many of the changes, is expected to attend the hearing.
