Substance-abuse policy revision would elminate meeting requirement for non-athletes, parents
The School Board's policy on student substance abuse, revised last June, is undergoing a new revision pertaining to students in non-athletic extracurricular activities.
The revision would eliminate a requirement for students participating in non-athletic activities and their parents to attend a meeting with school officials to learn about the consequences of student substance abuse.
"We had made some changes to this policy last spring that involved communication to parents about this particular policy at the High School, and encountered perhaps some glitches here and there," said Rebecca Millet, chairman of the board's policy subcommittee, at the Nov. 3 meeting of the board. High School Principal Jeff Shedd offered some new wording for the meeting requirement, which was presented for first reading to the board Nov. 3.
Under the proposal, athletes would still be required to attend a pre-season meeting with their parents, but those involved in other extracurriculars would not.
Millet said that for non-athletic activities, coaches or staff would communicate the policy information to enrolled students. All students enrolled in an activity, regardless of type, and their parents would still need to sign an agreement acknowledging understanding of the school's proscribed consequences for substance abuse.
The revised policy will be presented to the board for a second reading at a special meeting at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the High School library.
The last revisions to the policy, adopted in June 2009, eased consequences for first-time offenders participating in any extracurricular activity, and encouraged self-reporting of substance abuse.
