Council subcommittee to take
comprehensive look at town parking
Residents with anything to say about parking in Cape Elizabeth will
have their chance in the next few months.
From
now until November, the Town Council's ordinance subcommittee will be
reviewing all parking regulations in the town as a result of a
recommendation from Police Chief Neil Williams.
For several
years, especially during the summer, drivers seeking access to Casino
Beach have caused parking problems at the end of Cottage Lane. Cars
parked there inhibit emergency vehicle access, Williams said in a memo
to
the Town Council.
"It would be my recommendation for the
Ordinance Committee to review Chapter 13 concerning “No Parking” near
the end of Cottage Lane and possible the narrow end of Surf Road to
alleviate this problem," he said.
Further, he is recommending removal of a
section of the ordinance prohibiting on-street parking when parking in
another location is available.
The council, however, is aiming to
review all parking regulations, including those surrounding a newly
expanded business zone at Shore Road. While parking issues are often
addressed piecemeal, the directive to the ordinance committee provides
a framework for a comprehensive review of parking regulations, said
Town Manager Michael McGovern.
"If anyone has any concerns about
parking in town, this would be a good chance to bring it forward,"
McGovern said at the Aug. 10 meeting of the council.
The committee will report back to the full council with recommendations
by November, 2009. |
