Applications for Nov. 3, 2009 absentee ballots now available

At nomination deadline, 10 candidates emerge for municipal election; four more wait to be certified

At 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, the deadline for nominations for the muncipal election to be held Nov. 3, 2009, five residents had been certified to run for three, three-year terms on the Town Council; and two had been certified to run for a one-year, unexpired term on the council.

Candidates slated to appear on the November ballot for Town Council are:

Three-year Town Council term (3 seats available)

  • Sara Lennon
  • Kimberly Monaghan-Derrig
  • Christopher Straw
  • Jessica Sullivan
  • James Walsh

One-year, unexpired Town Council term (1 seat available)

  • Frank Governali
  • Michael Jordan

In the race for School Board, also to be held Nov. 3, three residents had nomination papers verfied, and four more are awaiting certification after the holiday weekend. They are:

Three-year School Board term - 3 seats available (certified)

  • John Christie
  • Peter Cotter
  • Frederic Sturtevant

and, Three-year School Board term: (not yet certified)

  • Mary Williams-Hewitt
  • David Hillman
  • Richard B. Dunham
  • Ruth Anne Haley

Peititions for the last four residents were returned to the town clerk's office after 3:30 p.m. on Friday, not allowing enough time for certification before the end of business. Town Clerk Debra Lane is expected to announce the final slate of municipal election candidates on Tuesday, Sept. 8, after all have been certified.

Four seats on the Town Council and three on the School Board will be up for election. Three on the council are three-year terms currently held by David Backer, Sara Lennon and Jim Rowe; and one is the remaining year of an unexpired term held by Paul McKenney, who resigned from the council effective in December. The three seats on the School Board are three-year terms currently held by Trish Brigham, Karen Burke and Peter Cotter.
