More candidates certified for municipal election on last day of nomination
More candidates joined the field of hopefuls for Town Council and School Board on the morning of Sept. 4, 2009 - the last day to circulate nomination petitions for the Nov. 3 municipal election.
Town Council incumbent Sara Lennon, and School Board incumbent Peter Cotter both returned verified nomination petitions this morning, as did School Board challenger Frederic Sturtevant.
Four seats on the Town Council and three seats on the School Board will be up for election. All are three-year terms, except for one year of an unexpired term on the Town Council.
As of 9:15 a.m. Sept. 4, a total of nine residents had collected enough signatures to be included on the Nov. 3 ballot. Petitions are due for signature certificaton at the town clerk's office before 4 p.m.
On the morning of Sept. 4, these residents had returned nominating petitions and had them verified:
Three-year Town Council term:
- Sara Lennon
- Christopher Straw
- Jessica Sullivan
- James Walsh
One-year, unexpired Town Council term:
- Frank Governali
- Michael Jordan
Three-year School Board term:
- John Christie
- Peter Cotter
- Frederic Sturtevant
Six residents have taken out petitions for a three-year council term, but have not yet returned them:

Potential candidates for municipal office must gather between 25-100 signatures from Cape Elizabeth voters, and present them in person for verification before the Sept. 4 deadline.
Petitions are available in the town clerk's office at Town Hall. A five-year term on the Portland Water District Board of Trustees will also be up for election. One resident, Leon Humiston, has taken out petitions for that contest.
Residents wishing to run represent Cape Elizabeth and South Portland on the water district board must gather between 35-50 registered voters in Cape Elizabeth AND between 100-150 registered voters in South Portland, and present them to the clerks in both municipalities prior to the Sept. 4 deadline to complete the papers.

signs. The town's sign ordinance (Chapter
21) limits the size and placement of political signs in Cape Elizabeth.
