Races taking shape prior to municipal election nomination deadline
With one day remaining to collect signatures for nomination for this year's municipal election, races are shaping up for seats on the Town Council and School Board.
At the end of business Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, six residents had collected enough signatures to be included on the Nov. 3 ballot. Petitions are due for signature certificaton at the town clerk's office before 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.
Four seats on the Town Council and three seats on the School Board will be up for election. All are three-year terms, except for one year of an unexpired term on the Town Council.
As of 4 p.m. Thursday, these residents had returned nominating petitions and had them verified:
Three-year Town Council term:
- Christopher Straw
- Jessica Sullivan
- James Walsh
One-year, unexpired Town Council term:
- Michael Jordan
- Frank Governali
Three-year School Board term:
One additional potential candidate for Town Council had taken out petitions on Sept. 3. W. David Grffin, Channel View Road, took out nomination papers for one of the three-year council terms, joining these residents who have taken out papers but not yet returned them:
- Maureen Humiston
- Sara Lennon
- Mary Ann Lynch
- David Hillman
- Daniel Fishbein
- Kimberly Monaghan-Derrig
These residents have taken out petitions for the one-year unexpired council term, but not yet returned them:

Potential candidates for municipal office must gather between 25-100 signatures from Cape Elizabeth voters, and present them in person for verification before the Sept. 4 deadline.
Petitions are available in the town clerk's office at Town Hall. A five-year term on the Portland Water District Board of Trustees will also be up for election. One resident, Leon Humiston, has taken out petitions for that contest.
Residents wishing to run represent Cape Elizabeth and South Portland on the water district board must gather between 35-50 registered voters in Cape Elizabeth AND between 100-150 registered voters in South Portland, and present them to the clerks in both municipalities prior to the Sept. 4 deadline to complete the papers.

All candidates are encouraged to contact the clerk before putting up political
signs. The town's sign ordinance (Chapter
21) limits the size and placement of political signs in Cape Elizabeth.
