Interest in Nov. 3 municipal election nomination picks up as deadline draws near

Interest in the municipal election to be held Nov. 3, 2009 has picked up as the deadline for nominations draws near.

As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, nine residents had taken out nominating petitons for one of three, three-year terms on the Town Council that will be up for election. In addition, seven residents have taken out petitions for the remaining year of an unexpired term on the council.

Some of those taking out petitions for the unexpired term have also taken petitions for a one-year term.

Here is a list of potential candidates for Town Council:

Three-year term (three seats)

In a School Board election that will also be on Nov. 3, five residents have taken out petitions for one of three, three-year terms. They are:

Three-year terms (three seats)
  • Frederic Sturtevant
  • John Christie
  • Mary Williams-Hewitt
  • David Hillman
  • Peter Cotter

Potential candidates for municipal office must gather between 25-100 signatures from Cape Elizabeth voters, and present them in person for verification before the Sept. 4 deadline.

A five-year term on the Portland Water District Board of Trustees will also be up for election. One resident, Leon Humiston, has taken out petitions for that contest.

Residents wishing to run represent Cape Elizabeth and South Portland on the water district board must gather between 35-50 registered voters in Cape Elizabeth AND between 100-150 registered voters in South Portland, and present them to the clerks in both municipalities prior to the Sept. 4 deadline to complete the papers.

All candidates are encouraged to contact the clerk before putting up political signs. The town's sign ordinance (Chapter 21) limits the size and placement of political signs in Cape Elizabeth.
