More show interest in nomination for Town Council election
As of 3:45 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, three more residents have taken out nominating papers to run for one of four Town Council seats that will be up for election on Nov. 3, 2009.
David Hillman, 22 Cranbrook Drive; Daniel Fishbein, 6 Hunts Point Road; and, Jim Walsh, 23 Rock Crest Drive, have taken out nomination papers to run for a three-year term.
The three-year terms that will be ending in December are currently held by Sara Lennon, David Backer and Jim Rowe. A fourth seat, the unexpired term of Councilor Paul McKenney, will also be on the November ballot. Fishbein and Walsh have also taken out nominating petitions for the one-year unexpired term that will be up for election.
Nominating papers are due at the town clerk's office before 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.
Hillman, Fishbein and Walsh join five other residents who have taken out nominating petitions for a three-year council term. They are incumbent Lennon; Jessica Sullivan; Mary Ann Lynch; Maureen Humiston; and, Christopher Straw.
Lynch has also taken out petitions for the one-year term. Eariler this week, Sullivan returned uncirculated petitions for the one-year term.
So far only one candidate, Richmond Terrace resident Michael Jordan, has completed nominating petitions. His name will appear on the ballot for the unexpired council term.
Also up for election Nov. 3 will be three, three-year terms on the School Board currently held by Trish Brigham, Karen Burke and Peter Cotter. One resident, Fred Sturtevant of Pond View Road, has taken out petitions for one of those seats.
Potential candidates for municipal office must gather between 25-100 signatures from Cape Elizabeth voters, and present them in person for verification before the Sept. 4 deadline.
A five-year term on the Portland Water District Board of Trustees will also be up for election. One resident, Leon Humiston, has taken out petitions for that contest.
Residents wishing to run represent Cape Elizabeth and South Portland on the water district board must gather between 35-50 registered voters in Cape Elizabeth AND between 100-150 registered voters in South Portland, and present them to the clerks in both municipalities prior to the Sept. 4 deadline to complete the papers.
