Eight take out petitions for municipal office, none have returned them yet

The Nov. 3, 2009 municipal election has generated some interest, but none of the eight potential candiates who have taken out nominating petitions have returned them to the town clerk's office.

Four seats on the Town Council and three on the School Board will be up for election. One of those Town Council seats is the unexpired term of Paul McKenney, who announced his resignation in June.

Also on the ballot will be a five-year term to represent Cape Elizabeth and South Portland on the Portland Water District's Board of Trustees.

Since nominating petitions became available July 27, eight residents have taken out papers for municipal office.

Taking out petitions for a three-year council term are:

  • Maureen D. Humiston, 44 Warren Ave.
  • Sara W. Lennon, 54 Cranbrook Drive
  • Christopher M. Straw, 597 Shore Road
  • Mary Ann Lynch, 2 Olde Colony Lane
  • Jessica L. Sullivan, 38 Cranbrook Drive

Lynch and Sullivan have also taken out petitions for the one-year, unexpired term on the council. Two other residents who have shown interest in the unexpired term are John W. McGinty, 86 Brentwood Road; and Michael S. Jordan, 59 Richmond Terrace.

Of those who have taken out papers for council, only one, Sara Lennon, is an incumbent. The others whose terms are ending, Jim Rowe and David Backer, have indicated they do not intend to run for re-election.

The three-year School Board terms have only attracted one petitioner, Frederic K. Sturtevant, 9 Pond View Road.

The School Board seats that are up for election are currently held by Trish Brigham, Karen Burke and Peter Cotter.

Candidates for municipal office must gather between 25-100 signatures from registered Cape Elizabeth voters and have them verified by the town clerk before 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.

The Portland Water District Board of Trustees election has also drawn one potential candidate from Cape Elizabeth, Leon D. Humiston, Jr., 44 Warren Ave.

Residents seeking election to the water district board must collect between 35-50 registered voters in Cape Elizabeth AND between 100-150 registered voters in South Portland, and present them to the clerks in both municipalities prior to the Sept. 4 deadline to complete the papers.

All candidates are encouraged to contact the clerk before putting up political signs. The town's sign ordinance (Chapter 21) limits the size and placement of political signs in Cape Elizabeth.
