School Board candidate withdraws
RuthAnne Haley, nominee for the Nov. 3 School Board election, has withdrawn from the race for "family reasons", according to Town Clerk Debra Lane.
Haley was one of seven Cape Elizabeth residents to complete nominating petitions for the Nov. 3 municipal election.
In consultation with the clerk's office, an attorney from the Maine Municipal Association said that Haley is allowed to withdraw, Lane said.
Haley's name will not appear on the ballot because the final ballot order had not yet been made at the time of notification this morning, Lane said.
Absentee ballots should be available approximately 30 days before the election. Click here for information about absentee balloting
If her name had appeared on the ballot and she were elected but did not serve, a special election would need to be held to take her place, Lane said.
Haley's withdrawal leaves six candidates for three open seats on the board. They are:
- John C. Christie III
- Peter H. Cotter
- Richard B. Dunham
- David C. Hillman
- Frederic K. Sturtevant
- Mary K. Williams-Hewitt
The School Board terms expire Dec. 10, 2012.
In addition, five residents will be seeking election to three, three-year terms on the Town Council; and two will seek to serve the last year of an unexpired council term. They are:
Town Council Unexpired Term Until 12/13/2010
-
Frank J. Governali
- Michael S. Jordan
Town Council 3 Year Term Until 12/10/2012
- Sara W. Lennon
- Kimberly J. Monaghan-Derrig
- Christopher M. Straw
- Jessica L. Sullivan
- James T. Walsh
Also up for election on the Nov. 3 ballot is a five-year term representing Cape Elizabeth and South Portland on the Portland Water District Board of Trustees.
No candidate has been nominated for this race, but names may be written in. Anyone who writes in a name for this seat must include the name and municipality of residence. The trustee may be a resident of Cape Elizabeth or South Portland.
