Slate of candidates announced for Nov. 3 municipal election

Fourteen residents will be vying for seats on the Town Council and on the School Board in the Nov. 3, 2009 municipal election

Town Clerk Debra Lane has certified as candidates the four School Board nominees who returned petitions just prior to the 4 p.m. deadline Sept. 4.

The final certifications brings to seven the number of candidates seeking three, three-year terms on the School Board.

They are:

  • John C. Christie III
  • Peter H. Cotter
  • Richard B. Dunham
  • Ruth Anne Haley
  • David C. Hillman
  • Frederic K. Sturtevant
  • Mary K. Williams-Hewitt

The School Board terms expire Dec. 10, 2012.

In addition, five residents will be seeking election to three, three-year terms on the Town Council; and two will seek to serve the last year of an unexpired council term.

They are:

Town Council Unexpired Term Until 12/13/2010

  • Frank J. Governali
  • Michael S. Jordan
Town Council 3 Year Term Until 12/10/2012
  • Sara W. Lennon
  • Kimberly J. Monaghan-Derrig
  • Christopher M. Straw
  • Jessica L. Sullivan
  • James T. Walsh
Portland Water District Board of Trustees fails to attract candidate

Also up for election on the Nov. 3 ballot is a five-year term representing Cape Elizabeth and South Portland on the Portland Water District Board of Trustees. However, Lane said, no one from either community sought nomination for this seat.

There is a potential for a write-in campaign, Lane said. Anyone who writes in a name for this seat must include the name and municipality of residence. The trustee may be a resident of Cape Elizabeth or South Portland.
