Paul McKenney submits Town Council resignation

Town Councilor Paul McKenney has submitted his resignation to the council effective at the end of this year.

McKenney cited his military and civilian schedule for 2010 that will conflict with numerous council meetings scheduled for next year.

McKenney will finish out the second year of his current three year term which ends Dec. 13, 2010. In his letter, he said he intends to finish out the council year so his departure would not necessitate a special election.

Nomination papers for the last year of his unfinished term, as well as three, three-year terms on the Town Council and three on the School Board, will be available July 27, 2009, at the town clerk's office.

Other council seats that will be up for the next municipal election, scheduled for Nov. 3, 2009, are currently held by David Backer, Sara Lennon and Jim Rowe. School Board seats that will be up for election are held by Trish Brigham, Karen Burke and Peter Cotter.

"I know I speak for the rest of the Town Council in saying how happy we are to have had the opportunity to be in service with Paul," said Rowe, chairman of the council, at their June 8 meeting. "He is a truly outstanding individual, and has a very calming influence on us all," Rowe said.

McKenney was first elected to the council in a special election in January 2005, to fill the unexpired term of John McGinty. McKenney was re-elected to a three year term in November 2007.
