Cape Elizabeth top public high school in meeting, exceeding state assessment standards

A higher percentage of Cape Elizabeth High School juniors who took the Maine High School Assessment test in 2007-08 met or exceeded the state's proficiency standards than in any other public high school in the state.

According to a report published by the Center for Education Policy, Applied Research and Evaluation at the University of Southern Maine, an average of 82.43 percent of Cape Elizabeth juniors who took the test in 2007-08 met or exceeded the state standards. The report generated composite scores in the subject areas of math, reading, science and writing for 130 Maine high schools.

Cape Elizabeth had the highest percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards among public high schools. Two high schools that had higher percentages were the Maine High School of Science and Math, with 89.86 percent; and John Bapst Memorial High School, 85.71 percent.

The test was administered last spring and is part of the Maine SAT initiative which requires Maine juniors to take the College Board's SAT test.

"I congratulate the students of Cape Elizabeth High School, the teachers of Cape Elizabeth High School, and the teachers who came before them, who provide our young people with the knowledge that is required to peform at this level," said Superintendent Alan Hawkins at the May 12, 2009 meeting of the School Board.

Following Cape Elizabeth in percentage of students successfully meeting standards was Yarmouth, 76.98 percent; Falmouth, 73.03 percent; Greely, 68.16 percent; and York, 65.54 percent.
In terms of combined scaled average scores, Cape Elizabeth was second in the state with a score of 4610, behind the Maine High School of Science and Math's score of 4642.

According to a summary report published on the Maine Department of Education Web site, the percentage of Cape Elizabeth High School juniors meeting the standards in 2008 is comparable to the 2007 figures. Testing was broken down that year into math, reading and writing categories.

The Maine High School Assessment and SAT initiative was instituted in 2006.
