Adventure phys. ed. class to embark on annual sea-rescue training event
Cape Elizabeth High School seniors will put the "physical" in physical education as they embark on the Adventure Class's annual overnight sea-kayaking trip Nov. 5, 2009. Since September, students in the Adventure Physical Education class have been learning a combination of outdoor skills, including first-aid, surf kayaking and kayaking safety, rescue techniques and navigation.
Starting at 9 a.m. on Nov. 5, students will put their newly learned skills to use as they paddle sea kayaks from Kettle Cove to Richmond Island. There they will set up camp, and prepare for the annual night rescue scene, scheduled for 7 p.m. that night.
"This is the eighth year we have coordinated with all the rescue teams to provide a 'realistic' night training rescue", said physical-education instructor Scott Shea.
Cape Elizabeth's Water Extrication Team, along with rescue teams from Scarborough, the Coast Guard, Civil Air Patrol and Red Cross will participate in a rescue training event to locate and treat the Cape High students "lost at sea", Shea said.
Shea said he is always impressed by the cooperation and communication exhibited by the professionals in this annual training rescue. And for the students, "the students get to experience a variety of memorable events in a short time frame," Shea said.
