Ceremony officially honors Great Pond public-access easement
Town officials, employees, volunteers and a private land owner gathered near the shore of Great Pond June 26, 2009 for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to celebrate a vital link in the town's greenbelt trail system, and the further protection of public access to Great Pond.
Several members of the town's Public Works Department were also on hand to commemorate the official opening of a public easement purchased by the town and by the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust from Jodie and Patricia Jordan.
Speaking in thanks to the Jordan Family for their generosity, and years of allowing informal use of the trail, were Dick Bauman, representing the town's Conservation Commission, Chris Franklin, executive director of the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust,
and Jim Rowe, chairman of the Town Council.
In his remarks, Rowe cited the contentious history of public access to Great Pond, and recounted his own experiences as a life-long resident of the town. He thanked the Jordan family for their role in keeping access to the pond open for future generations.
Special thanks were also offered to the Public Works Department for their aid in the newly completed trail improvements.
