Schools set Oct. 30, 2009 for student H1N1 flu clinic

Cape Elizabeth schools have scheduled an H1N1 flu clinic for students on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009.

The date is subject to change, however, depending on availability of the vaccine. Updates will be posted on the School Department Web site.

A letter went to parents Oct. 21, along with consent forms and information sheets about H1N1, the vaccine, and the optional nasal mist.

Like the School Department's first flu clinic, held Sept. 25 for seasonal flu, the H1N1 clinic will be held at the Town Center Fire Station and administered by HomeHealth Visting Nurses of Saco.

High School and Middle School students whose parents have given consent will be the first to get the vaccine in the morning, and, like the September flu clinic, Pond Cove children, accompanied by a parent or other trusted adult, will get the vaccine in the afternoon. Unlike the September clinic, which was held on an early-release day for elementary students, the H1N1 clinic will be held while school is in session.

The school is making plans to have parents meet their children in the school lobby and accompany them to the clinic. A schedule has been made for specific Pond Cove classrooms.

Superintendent Alan Hawkins credited the three school nurses numerous volunteers for making the seasonal flu clinic held Sept. 25 run smoothly.. "It was the most coordinated event I've ever seen," Hawkins said at the Oct. 13 meeting of the School Board.

Nearly 50 percent of Cape Elizabeth students received a seasonal flu vaccine, Hawkins said.
