Time to move portable basketball hoops away from public roadways
Cape Elizabeth Public Works would like to remind residents to remove portable basketball hoops from the edge of the roadway during the winter season.
Public Works Director Robert Malley said hoops need to be well away from roadside, 10 feet or more, to avoid damage to plowing equipment and to the hoops themselves.
"These devices can be a hazard to not only our equipment when we are plowing or sanding, but to school buses and delivery vehicles alike," Malley said.
Following the first plowable snow of the season this weekend, Malley said drivers have found that most hoops are still on the road edges, with rims hanging well out into the travel lanes.
"The rims are about the same height as our mirrors and warning lights. They are made of heavy steel and can do some substantial damage. The bases can also get damaged by our plows, or by the weight of compressed snow since they are only made of plastic," Malley said.
Public Works is not responsible for damage to basketball hoops left in the town right-of-way, nor does the town wish to see this equipment damaged, Malley said.
