College Board recognizes 50 from Cape High with AP Scholar Awards
Cape Elizabeth High School has announced that 50 students have earned recognition from the College Board with AP Scholar Awards, for their exceptional achievement on advanced-placement exams.
The number represents an increasingly high percentage of Cape Elizabeth students taking the exams who achieve scholar status. Of those who took the exams in 2009, 18 percent earned AP Scholar awards. This number compares to 13 percent in 2008 and 2007, 11 percent in 2006, 12 percent in 2005 and 7 percent in 2004.
Students take AP exams after completing challenging college-level courses at their high schools. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the number of full-year courses and exams taken.
For the 2008-09 school year at Cape Elizabeth High School:
- Four students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
- Fourteen students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams
- Seventeen students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
- Nineteen students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher.
In addition, twelve of these students are current seniors at Cape Elizabeth High School and have one more year in which to complete college-level work and possibly earn a higher-level AP Scholar Award. |
