Kids have a chance to 'walk to school' June 11
Cape Elizabeth students will have a chance to walk to school on June 11.
"Walk to School Day" has been established to support healthy habits and encourage
physical activity for students in grades K-8.
On Monday, June 11, students who take the bus to school will first be transported
to Cape Elizabeth High School to walk one lap around the school's quarter-mile
track. Students will then be escorted on a walk to the Pond Cove/Middle School
campus.
Participation in the walk will be voluntary, said Community Services Director
Sue Weatherbie. "It's all very casual, this way kids will get a little exercise
before they go to their classrooms," she said.
Parents who transport their children to school, but wish to have them participate
in the walk, may drop them off at the High School track.
"Walk to School Day" is an initiative of the School Board's Wellness Committee,
which has been charged with making recommendations related to the
schools'
wellness policy. Committee members have been meeting with experts and
representatives of neighboring communities to gather ideas for promoting
health and wellness in Cape Elizabeth.
