Committee taking first steps toward 'Sports Done Right'

The School Board is taking the first steps toward adopting the University of Maine's "Sports Done Right" philosophy for youth athletics in Cape Elizabeth.

At their February meeting, the board voted to establish a leadership team charged with developing an action plan for adopting the Sports Done Right philosophy in Cape Elizabeth.

Sports Done Right, based on a 2005 report developed at the University of Maine, is a collection of practices and principals that promote sportsmanship, fairness, and a positive sports experience for Maine youth. The report was crafted as a companion piece to the Maine Learning Results.

More information about Sports Done Right, including copies of the report, are available on the MCSC Web site, http://www.sportsdonerightmaine.org

Linda Winker, School Board member and chairman of the board's student extracurricular committee, said the leadership team is a beginning step toward adopting the Sports Done Right philosophy.

"The first step in that whole process is to start developing a leadership team to start educating all of the citizens of Cape Elizabeth," Winker said at the Feb. 13 meeting of the School Board.

Last month, representatives of Sports Done Right were invited to present their philosophy to School Board members, school athletic officials, and leaders of youth sports organizations in town. "It was really quite an interesting evening," said Winker.

"Where we all work under the one-town concept, this program will fit very well with the scheme of things here in Cape Elizabeth," she said. "We want to involve all of the citizens here in town, we want to involve all of the youth organizations, not just our athletic and extracurricular programs at the schools," Winker said.

The leadership team, as approved by the board, will include parents, student athletes, a School Board member, educators, coaches and community members.

Members will be nominated to the committee and will come back to the board with a recommendation. One of the committee's activities will be to hold a public forum to present the philosophies of Sports Done Right to the community.
