School athletics officials eye
'Sports Done Right'
Representatives from the 'Sports Done Right' council of the University of
Maine will meet with school and athletic department administrators this week
to discuss the core principals of Sports Done Right.
The meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, represents a step toward
adopting the philosophy outlined in a report published by the Maine Center
for Sports and Coaching at UMaine.
The 2005 report, formally titled "Sports Done Right: A Call to Action on
Behalf of Maine's Student-Athletes" centers around seven core principles
and supporting practices that promote sportsmanship, fairness, and a positive
sports experience for Maine youth. It was crafted as a companion piece to
the Maine Learning Results.
Sue Weatherbie, director of Cape Elizabeth Community Services, told members
of the School Board that this is an initial meeting between members of the
council and school administrators. "This is not the public forum," Weatherbie
said at the board's January meeting. "I think, should we move ahead, that
that will be announced and will come later on, but we would welcome anyone
in the public really wanting to come."
Any member of the public wishing to attend is asked to contact
Weatherbie, 799-2868,
so that appropriate materials will be available.
The School Department has also extended invitations to representatives of
Cape Little League, Casco Bay Soccer, Casco Bay Hockey and Cape Elizabeth
Football.
The core principals of Sports Done Right include philosophy; values and
sportsmanship; sports and learning; parents and community; quality of coaching;
opportunity to play; health and fitness; and, leadership, policy and
organization. The report also includes sections on middle level sports and
out-of-school sports.
