State officials to visit Pond
Cove to verify building fund application
Representatives from the State Department of Education plan a site visit
this month to determine whether the Pond Cove School building project is
eligible for state funding.
The Cape Elizabeth School Department has submitted a Revolving Renovation
Loan Fund Priority III application, which considers funding for learning
spaces and new additional small spaces. The DOE includes site visits in all
Priority III application reviews in order to be as fair and as comprehensive
as possible.
Representatives from the state are slated to visit the school Feb. 26 to
verify the application, but Superintendent Dr. Thomas Forcella said he does
not expect Cape Elizabeth to be awarded much funding.
For example, Forcella said, Yarmouth recently had a $20 million project which
qualified for $400,000 out of the revolving fund. The size of the award ,
if any, depends on the number of other applications and the size of the project.
"With a $1.5 million project I don't have expectations for a lot of money,
if any," Forcella said."But some will help," he said.
Last November voters approved a $1.5 million bond to build a new wing on
the Pond Cove School to house kindergarten students. For the last 12 years
kindergarten classes in Cape Elizabeth have been held in a wing of the High
School.
Forcella was more optimistic, however, for funding for a $7.9 million project
to renovate the 35-year-old High School building. The school will go through
an application process similar to that being done for Pond Cove, but because
the High School project involves compliance with the Americans with Disabilities
Act and other health and safety issues, Forcella said he was more hopeful
that Cape Elizabeth would qualify for funding. Again, he said, the amount
depends on the size of the project and the number of other applications. |
