Cianchette is clear pick of
Cape Republicans for governor's race
In one of the few contested races in Tuesday's primary, South Portland resident
and former State House representative Peter Cianchette emerged a clear favorite
among Cape Elizabeth voters in the Republican primary for governor.
Cianchette garnered 677 votes from Cape Elizabeth Republicans, compared with
175 for challenger James Libby of Buxton.
In a more closely contested race, Linda Boudreau was the Cape's choice for
Republican candidate for State Senate in Dist. 30. She received 480 votes
from Cape residents, compared with 313 for Ralph Kilgore, also of South Portland.
In all the primary and referendum election drew nearly 19 percent of the
Cape electorate, with 1,429 voters turning out, for a total of 18.9 percent.
Among primary races, the Republican contest for governor drew the most Cape
votes, with 852 voting in that contest.
On the Democrat ballot, the two contested races on that card also showed
clear favorites. Cape Democrats favored favorite son John P. Simpson for
register of deeds over Portland's John O'Brien, 350-101; and, in the nomination
for county sheriff, they favored Portland's Mark Dion over South Portland's
Thomas Roche, 350-113.
Republicans in Cape Elizabeth also sided heavily in their preference for
sheriff, with William Holmes of Portland topping Timothy Farr of Standish
543-148.
On the referendum questions, Cape voters favored both bond issues, with the
$28.5 million for school renovations getting 937 yes votes compared with
492 no votes. The vote in Cape for Question 2, the $34.97 million bond issue
for economic development, was not so one-sided however, with 772 Cape residents
voting yes and 648 voting no.
