Cape Elizabeth, Maine – Recycling Committee
Draft: Minutes of August 26, 2010 meeting
Members present: Mary Brock, David Ernst, Jamie Garvin, Jennifer Hansen, John Kane, Mike Pulsifer. Members absent: Greg Walsh. Administration: Bob Malley. Guests: Emily Holliday from Cape High School Environmental Club, and her brother representing the Middle School Environmental Club.
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 PM. The June 21 minutes were approved. There was no July meeting.
The town’s June recycling rate was 27.89%, slightly down from previous months.
The RC’s new member, Jamie Garvin, was introduced and thanked for his willingness to serve on the committee.
The RC’s presence at the June 26 Strawberry Fest was reviewed and those attending it felt that it was a worthwhile opportunity for getting the recycling message out.
Emily Holliday attended a recent conference on composting, and with her leadership the Environmental Club plans on starting a pilot food composting program at the high school. This will be tended by club members, who will also begin to work with and educate the Pond Cove students on recycling issues. The Environmental Club would like to joint venture with town officials in a fall or spring sale of more Earth Machine home composters, an extension of their successful program this past spring. Club members were invited to attend the RC meetings on a regular basis.
The Environmental Club was also invited to write an article for the Courier explaining some of the recycling and other activities they have been involved with.
A web mail communication from Cape citizen William Marshall was received asking about help with recycling issues at his condominium association. John and Mary volunteered to form a subcommittee to research further the issues of recycling efforts/opportunities/impediments at all of Cape’s condominium complexes.
Bob reminded the RC of the upcoming public hearing on the town council’s pay-per-throw proposal on Monday evening, September 13.
The RC agreed to purchase 50-75 stainless steel water bottles labeled with our recycling logo for the purpose of distribution (? as prizes) at future town events, e.g. Fall Harvest, Family Fun Day, etc.
The next RC meeting will be on Thursday, September 23, 2010 in the Public Works Building at 7 PM. Meeting dates for the rest of the year will be October 28, November 18, and December 16.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 PM.
Respectfully submitted, David Ernst, secretary.
