Monthly Meeting Minutes
June 8, 2010, 7 pm @ Thomas Memorial Library
Present: All
Minutes of the May meeting were not approved, as many
members did not receive them. Jay will resend them via email and we will vote
on them at our next meeting after the summer recess.
Treasurer’s Report: Wendy reported a balance of $250
from out 2009/10 budget. We voted
unanimously to spend the remainder of the budget to enhance the collection of
classic films in the library in the amount of $250 and authorized Chris to make
the purchases for us based on previous discussions with the Commission.
Gallery: Aaron
has called our scheduled artists for July and August several times; has been
unable to reach them, to clarify whether or not they plan to have opening
receptions. He will continue to attempt contact. Anticipated receptions: July 9
will be covered by Tina and Wendy; August 6, Chris Gebhart.
There are no exhibit applications to review. The gallery is
fully booked through the end of 2010 and partially for 2011. Chris will call Suzi Van Wye to confirm when
she plans to hold her bookmaking seminar.
Town Art Collection: Julia wrote an article for The
Cape Courier on the inventory she’s undertaken, and passed it along to Doug,
with two photos, for his review. She is
contemplating her next step in the process and will contact Mike McGovern to
gain a fuller understanding of which town buildings
house parts of the collection. We discussed possibly hanging the entire
collection in the library gallery when the inventory is complete.
The Commission has in the past been directed by the Town
Council to spend $400 (outside of our budget) for the acquisition of a piece of
art at the Labor Day Art Show at Fort Williams Park. Jay will check in with Mike
McGovern to confirm that those funds are in the town budget for this fiscal
year.
Film Festival: Doug and Chris have been researching
details involved with the Commission possibly holding a film night, perhaps
even a series of showings, perhaps even a “festival”. Many ideas and options
were discussed, and will continue to be reviewed when we reconvene in the
fall.
The meeting adjourned at 8:04 pm. The Commission does not meet during July and
August; the next meeting is scheduled for September 13, 7 pm, at the
Library.
Respectfully submitted,

Minutes – May 11, 2010 meeting
Present: Ruth Anne Haley, chair; Jay Scherma, Library Director; Wendy Seltzer; Julia Bassett-Schwerin; Doug McFadd; Chris Gebhart; Tina Harnden
Absent: Aaron Mosher
The meeting opened at 7 pm at the Thomas Memorial Library.
Minutes of the April meeting were approved.
Treasurer’s Report: Our balance stands at $250, with no expenses incurred during the past month. It was noted that we should vote at our June 8 meeting to expend by June 30 the remainder of our 2010 budget. We discussed many options including possible film purchases for the library collection. There was much interest in the idea of screening a film or films for the public, possibly even starting a small film festival with the funds. Chris said he would speak with Public Works Director Bob Malley re showing a film/films at Fort Williams (one of several possible locations discussed), and also said he will check on the costs/legal issues surrounding screening rights.
Gallery Receptions: We discussed whether rescheduling the monthly artist receptions from first Fridays (usually) to another night, or later in the month (depending on conflicting holidays/events) may bring in more patrons and/or be more convenient for chaperones. It was decided we would continue to offer exhibiting artists the option of choosing any Friday in the month they preferred, but that hosting a reception on another night of the week was unlikely to boost attendance or be more practical for chaperones.
Town Inventory: Julia was recently assisted in her town art inventory project (the portion of the collection hung in the library) by a Cape Girl Scout troop. The girls took the project very seriously, learned a lot about the artwork and the library, and were very enthusiastic. A special meeting with sculptor Edward Materson was very well received. We discussed ways in which we might share the collection with the public on a more regular basis, perhaps having a dedicated exhibit, and Julia and Doug will coordinate putting together an article on the project for The Cape Courier.
Gallery Requests: There were no new requests to review.
The meeting adjourned at 8:25 pm.
The next meeting of the CEAC will be June 8, 7 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Tina Harnden
